PROJECT

Project Description

CLIENT: Goodwood

PROJECT: Aerodrome

SMD are proud to be resident surveyor for the Goodwood estate. Both the racecourse and the motor circuit are busy all year round, with 19 days of horse racing from May to October and various track days and driving experiences at the circuit. Within the motor circuit is Goodwood Aerodrome, a historic airfield that was used extensively during WWII when it was known as RAF Westhampnett. Several historic aircraft continue to be housed at the Aerodrome, including two Spitfires and a Harvard. Goodwood's 12,000 acre estate is home to a 91 room hotel and a 18th century clubhouse that once housed the Duke of Richmond’s hunting hounds. The most recent addition to the estate is Hound Lodge, a luxurious 10-bedroom country retreat with its own butler and private chef. At the heart of it all sits Goodwood House, set in picturesque parkland and home to the 11th Duke of Richmond and his family.

We provided Contract Administration and Quantity Surveying Services for the refurbishment of the existing Aerodrome building. The Aerodrome deals with all arrivals & departures from Goodwood, as well as providing pilot training rooms, offices and modern café facilities. There is also a roof top space available to hire for corporate events.

Project Brief

The brief from the client was an unusual one, as the exsiting building had been built poorly a few years earlier and was never used by the client. Following completion of the building a dispute arose over the quality of workmanship and litigation followed. SMD were asked to work with the new design team to refurbish the existing building to deliver the original goals of the project. This included a modern building with excellent acoustics, a building with clean lines whilst being in keeping with the Goodwood corporate image.

Project Solution / Outcome

Following a successful litigation process during the project, where the expert advisors described the building as one of the worst constructions they had ever seen, all of the buildings defects were made good and all the design goals were achieved. A central corridor of timber acoustic panelling, acoustic panels and acoustic curtain walling makes for a very quiet environment, even with Spitfires operating just outside the building. The leaking roof was replaced and a raised deck installed with the ability to withstand the weight of cars, for the use of potential clients wishing to use the building for corporate events.
