Project Description

CLIENT: Chichester Community Development Trust

PROJECT: Graylingwell Chapel

Chichester Community Development Trust (CCDT) is a community focused organisation, set up by Chichester District Council, to work with residents across Graylingwell Park and Roussillon Park, Chichester. It seeks to empower people by developing skills and supporting projects that create local opportunities, employment and build community spirit.

The restoration and extension of Graylingwell Chapel, a Grade 2 listed building, originally constructed as part of a large Victorian asylum built in the late 1800s, was a £2m National Heritage Fund supported project to provide a central hub for the local community, with a new café, seating area and facilities all designed to be a space for people to relax in and improve their mental health.

Project Brief

SMD were appointed as the Project Manager and Quantity Surveyor for the scheme, which comprised the construction of a new single-storey extension to form the café, along with the restoration of the existing Chapel, which involved a new roof, new flooring and restoration of the existing stonework.

The scheme also included landscaping works to the area, which included a decked seating area to the new café and mobility access.

Project Solution / Outcome

This project was a challenge as the design intention challenged the allocated budget from HLF and this required us to undertake significant value engineering, in order to meet the budget. Once this was achieved however, the challenges on site were minimal, with the main concern being procurement owing to the coronavirus pandemic.
