PROJECT

Project Description

CLIENT: Goodwood

PROJECT: March Stand

SMD are proud to be resident surveyor for the Goodwood estate. Both the racecourse and the motor circuit are busy all year round, with 19 days of horse racing from May to October, including Glorious Goodwood in September and various track days and driving experiences at the circuit. Within the racecourse is the March Stand, the biggest of the grandstands based adjacent to the finish line of the track. Goodwood's 12,000 acre estate is home to a 91 room hotel and an 18th century clubhouse that once housed the Duke of Richmond’s hunting hounds. The most recent addition to the estate is Hound Lodge, a luxurious 10-bedroom country retreat with its own butler and private chef. At the heart of it all sits Goodwood House, set in picturesque parkland and home to the 11th Duke of Richmond and his family.

We provided Contract Administration and Quantity Surveying Services for the refurbishment of the ground floor of the March Stand, with SMD undertaking the tender negotiations with the contractor whom had already been selected by the Client.

Project Brief

The aim was to create an updated, inviting and warm-feeling cafe and betting facilities within the ground floor area which was an inherently dark and harsh space given the vast concrete frame and open expanses. The existing area had also grown tired over the years with many busy race days being hosted there.

The scheme involved a new internal steel sub frame to form the café area, updated M&E services, including state of the art AV, a “flowing” concrete centrepiece counter, FF&E and café servery, as well as new betting “shops” in the Goodwood branding to replace the existing betting company branding.

Project Solution / Outcome

This was a challenging project as is often the case with refurbishment projects. On this occasion owing mostly to the tight programme in order to be ready for Glorious Goodwood. The scope of works was changed during the project to encompass the “flowing” concrete counter and the AV system which was designed to project the live horse racing onto the concrete counter. Both of these were technically challenging elements to incorporate. The project was delivered within programme (just!) and on budget.
